The native people of Hawaii are far
behind other native people in the US in getting a bit of their
original land back from the US government. Maybe it's because we stole it
from them so late in the game and finally figured out how to do it
right!
Eruptions of Mount Kilauea in the
late 1980's spared a small sliver of the town of Kapala, which is now
a hotbed of the sovereignty movement to reestablish the Kingdom of
Hawaii. Every Wednesday night Uncle Roberts' place, which is right at the edge of the lava flow, has a big party with food, crafts, and music. One
reason they do it is to help raise awareness and funds for the
movement, but this is Hawaii, and it's mostly a big party.
Hugh of the Avocado House told us about it when we stayed there, so we
went, and it was a blast.

It's been about 24 years since the lava cooled. It'll be awhile before they're raising cattle on this section.

Many local artists and
food sellers set up beneath the makeshift village of tents.
The house band plays Hawaiian and reggae. This local guy got up and did a little hula, to much applause.
As the sun set and the alcohol flowed, everyone was swinging - Island style. Even we danced!
