February 9 - Kuilau Ridge Trail

Sometimes you go on a long slog of a hike through ho-hum terrain just to get to a pretty view. Other times the surroundings along the trail are all the reward you expect.  The Kuilau Ridge trail provided the best of both.  It was a two hour hike without a whole lot of sweaty climbs or knee-wrenching descents.
Dr. Seuss had a hand in landscaping.

Or was it Gahan Wilson?

A peanut break looking at Wai'ale'ale Mountain (wettest spot on earth).

There have got to be dinosaurs in there somewhere.

Leaving Jurassic Park behind, we entered a beautiful forest of eucalyptus and paperbark trees.

It's rather obvious how the Paperbark got it's name.  It's a member of the Myrtle family.

Eucalyptus trees are not native to Hawaii, but they grow really well here.  Over 90 species of the Genus Eucalyptus can be found on the Island.  They too are members of the Myrtle family.

Again, Diana rests on a magnificent tree.
