January 16 - Lahaina to Hana

We started off with a nice breakfast at our B&B in Lahaina. We'd need the sustenance, it would be a long day.
Trevor from Liverpool can't believe the old bald guy is lucky enough to be traveling with three such lovely lasses.
First we stopped to view petroglyphs.
Notice the perfect V shapes of the Polynesian men ... it must be all the surfing. Speaking of which...
This must be a good spot to catch a wave.
Seems awfully crowded out there.
It's so bad the normal denizens are fleeing the water.
Hmmpf.  I hate surfers!

We had a picnic lunch at the beach, (turtle soup wasn't on the menu), shopped at the little town of Paia for wine, beer, and groceries, then started down the famous 'Road to Hana', a windy narrow road along the coast that gets a couple hundred inches of rain a year.  It's a real jungle out there.
Working our new thrift store Hawaiian togs
Diana and I took a short hike through the jungle.
This swamp mahogany has a giant house plant growing up it.
The mahogany trees aren't native here, but they get pretty big.
There are many waterfalls along the way.

We got to the Bamboo Inn near sunset - Chris and Amy stayed here last year, and loved it.  That's why we're back ... tomorrow we'll place Chris's ashes into Hana bay.

There are beautiful flowers everywhere.  These fresh blooms
graced our room
