January 26 - Catch-up Day

We got rooms in the Manago Hotel, a roadside inn that is a throwback to earlier times.  We were a bit doubtful at first; after the hour and a half drive down from the star party,we arrived at 10:30 pm and it seemed sort of dismal and dreary.  But when we woke up the next morning we realized what a gem it was: reasonable rates, immaculate basic furnishings (ie. no TV's in the rooms), and the friendliest service staff ever.  If you're ever on the Kona coast of the big island, do yourself a favor and stay a few days.

We spent the day sitting on our porches overlooking the Pacific Ocean, catching up on blogging, booking and business.  It was a nice relaxing day.

Downslope from the hotel were tropical fruit trees and lots of chickens.

The dining room serves basic fare, family style.  Sides are served first: rice, corn and peas, seaweed salad, and the best potato salad Diana has ever eaten.  Everyone gets the same thing, no matter what your main course is.

They are famous for their pork chops.  Looks delicious, doesn't it.  All three of us ordered them, and they were delectable!

One of the perks of the place; as we consumed wine and beer, the sun kept sinking lower and lower, although as soon as our lips were dry, it paused, waiting for the next sip.  Of course, we obliged.

  1. Great trip. At first the pork chop shot would not open. A culinary tease! It did on try three. Fun trip! Eat, drink, and be Gary!
